But that has put the project at the mercy of a myriad of other jobs. There have been some facets of construction that were ready to go. However, those have had to wait pending the completion of other site preparations.
“There’s only one opportunity to make our first impression,” Borders said.
He called the coordination of the project, the toughest job he’s had to manage in his extensive career.
“The logistics and timing have been the most challenging, but when it’s finished it will be something the community and the state will have to cherish in perpetuity,” he said.
The new dedication date will be December 12.
Florida Medal of Honor recipient Mr. Robert Ingram will be the keynote speaker for the dedication event.
Ingram was selected for the honor “ for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his own life above and beyond the call of duty.”
At the time he was serving as a Corpsman with Company “C,” First Battalion, Seventh Marines. Ingram’s unit was engaged against elements of a North Vietnamese battalion in the Quang Ngai Provence.
“One of the benefits of moving this back, is that the weather will be cooler,” Borders said. “There’s no cover at this portion of the site – so the new date should be more comfortable for everyone.”
He again thanked the community for their generosity and patience.
The Florida Medal of Honor Memorial is located at the intersection of Commerce and Eucalyptus streets in front of the Highlands County Government Center.
