In the case, the Bremerton School District fired Coach Kennedy from his coaching position after school officials decided his quiet, midfield post-game prayer was “coercive” and “divisive” speech that violated the Establishment Clause.
Statler pointed out that he had asked the board about placing The 10 Commandments in classrooms back in July. He later said he was told there could be “legal problems.”
He told the board, should it be a matter of cost, he personally would lead an effort to raise private funds to pay for such plaques.
School board members waited until the end of the meeting to address Statler’s concerns. Longtime school board member Donna Howerton pointed to Governor Ron Desantis, saying “…the governor could fix this for us.” Neither board members nor Superintendent Dr. Brenda Longshore took any public action on addressing Statler’s concerns.
